Getting into the right frame of mind before a match can begin days before a match is played.Fairmont head coach Neil Craft said he felt his team found its focus during an overtime win against Little Miami in its opening tournament match. The Firebirds trailed by a goal but fought back late to extend its season.Earning a second chance to knock off the Greater Western Ohio Conference champions became the perfect next opponent to keep things in tune.Fairmont avenged a regular season loss and earned a second consecutive Division I district championship by knocking off the Beavers 1-0 Saturday, Oct. 31, at Bellbrook High School.“It was on our mind. I thought that a couple bounces just didn’t go our way, and we weren’t at full strength, not to take anything away from their win in the regular season, but it put us in the right headspace to be focused on the job today,” said Craft.Fairmont (11-5-3) will play Walnut Hills, which defeated Centerville 2-0 Saturday, in a battle of double-digit seeds in the regional semifinals Wednesday at Wright State.Beavercreek won 3-1 in the regular season and had most of the possession through the initial 20 minutes of the rematch. Fairmont found its footing after and found the net with just under 10 minutes left in the half.As the ball bounced off the heads of both teams to one another, it eventually rolled out toward the feet of Gavin Weaver. The midfielder stepped into a shot from roughly 30 yards out and fired it to the far side of the net. Beavercreek keeper Cooper Martin leapt and got his left hand on the shot, but not with enough force to deflect it over the crossbar.“That is one of my favorite goals I’ve scored in my career,” Weaver said, adding he felt his eyes lit up once he the ball bounce his way.Carson Dewald came up big in net for the Firebirds near the end of the first half. A free kick taken just above the 18-yard box by Beavercreek’s Austin Moody curved around Fairmont’s wall of defenders but directly at Dewald. He was unable to corral the ball and it rolled right to Beavercreek’s Cooper Durham. A point blank shot was stopped by a diving Dewald who nearly met the ball as it came off his foot.“I get a first save and then a rebound that covered the goal,” Dewald said. “I believe that really just set the tone for the entire game defensively. I think after that they knew they weren’t scoring on me after everything.”Dewald and his defense continued to meet the moment in the second half. Beavercreek upped its attack and pummeled the penalty area with long throw-ins that resulted in several shooting lanes opening.Fairmont successfully countered several times in the final minutes earning corner kicks and scoring chances to alleviate the pressure.“Felt like we had a good game plan and just super proud of the players for the way they fought and, you know, found our chance,” Craft said. “Probably should have had a couple more, but that’s the way soccer goes. Defended really hard
