Each time San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk goes a few days without posting on social media, speculation grows about whether he’s finally taking some wiser advice. After last weekend’s raucous episode, in which he directed a sharp barb at his close friend, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, Aiyuk was back in the spotlight on Wednesday.
“You’re on my team now,” Aiyuk declared last weekend. “You follow my rules. Boy, I’m a grown a– man. You’re gonna have to start running behind your momma, and I might believe what you’re talking about, but until then, uh-uh.” That remark was startling enough to stoke chatter among fans. Some Washington supporters speculated that Aiyuk and Daniels were collaborating in a sly trolling maneuver aimed at the NFL world. The theory didn’t hold much water, but there were still enthusiasts who wanted to believe it was a calculated move to help Aiyuk secure his release from the 49ers.
On Wednesday, Aiyuk addressed Daniels directly. “He said, ‘I don’t do that internet s–t, Bro,’” Aiyuk recounted on Instagram, paraphrasing Daniels. “‘Hit my phone if you gotta talk to me. You got my number.’ I called, and he didn’t answer.” So, for anyone who clung to the conspiracy theory that Aiyuk and Daniels were in on a secret plan, has your belief changed?
Aiyuk also offered a forecast for his social-media behavior once he lands another NFL opportunity: “I’m still gonna be on my bullshit on social media,” he said. It appears, at least for now, that Aiyuk hasn’t learned much from the last several weeks.
