​The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their series-opening game against the San Diego Padres on Monday, 3-2 at Petco Park in San Diego.So, how did the Brewers end up on the wrong end of the low-scoring battle?Giving up runs lateMilwaukee struck first in the top of the second inning when Christian Yelich crushed a two-run home run to left-center field. Still, the Padres were quick to respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the second when right-hander Logan Henderson gave up a leadoff solo home run to Ty France.In the following innings, neither team could score. From the third through the sixth, Henderson was very effective, and he would not let San Diego get through against him.However, in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Padres struck again.France got the better of Henderson again when he hit a one-out single. Then, Jackson Merrill delivered a crushing blow in the form of a two-run home run to give San Diego a 3-2 lead. After Henderson subsequently walked former teammate Luis Rengifo, Brewers manager Pat Murphy went to his bullpen. By the end of his outing, Henderson had gone 6.1 innings and struck out seven batters while allowing five hits, three earned runs and a walk. Henderson was assessed the losing decision, which ended his six-game winning streak and made him 6-2 on the year.Poor offenseOther than Yelich’s home run, the Brewers’ offense was not good for much on Monday.Milwaukee went 6-for-30 at the plate with nine strikeouts. After San Diego took the lead in the seventh, the Brewers only mustered one hit the remainder of the game.One of Milwaukee’s common contributors, Brice Turang, had an especially poor game. In four at-bats, he struck out three times, which is not something Brewers fans are accustomed to seeing from him. Turang is often counted on as a consistent hitter, but it was not his night, nor was it for the rest of the team.Garrett Mitchell, another solid offensive piece for Milwaukee this season, also struck out three times and did not register a hit. Nothing came easy for the Brewers in this one, but there should not be cause for concern.At 74-45, Milwaukee still holds the best record in baseball. Conversely, the Padres are a team that is just trying to remain in the National League Wild Card hunt, and they know they must beat good teams down the stretch of the season to give themselves a chance.Therefore, it is not surprising that San Diego is posing a challenge, and there will be another chance for the Brewers on Tuesday.
