The Bristol Little League softball team had a rough outing in its opening game at the Little League Softball World Series Monday night in Greenville, N.C.Bristol, which won the New England Region championship after beating Rhode Island in dramatic fashion in the final game of the regionals in Bristol on July 23, lost 15-1 to Owensboro, Kentucky, the Central Region champion, in a four-inning game on Monday.Bristol will now head to the elimination bracket, where the Connecticut team will face Toms River (N.J.) on Tuesday at 1 p.m. (ESPN2).Toms River lost to Asia-Pacific 4-1 on Sunday.Kentucky had defeated Live Oak, Calif., the West regional champion, 11-1 in a four-inning game on Sunday to advance to the game against Bristol Monday.The game, which was supposed to start at 7 p.m., was postponed until 9 p.m. due to rain in the area.Kentucky scored nine runs in the top of the fourth inning to put the game away. Hailey Warren had two hits and four RBI and pitcher Michaela Knight had two hits and three RBI. Knight struck out three and gave up two hits.Kentucky got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Paisley Edge doubled in a run to put the Central team up 1-0 over Bristol.In the top of the second, Kentucky jumped on the Connecticut team, scoring five runs. With the bases loaded, Warren hit a three-run double to put Kentucky up 4-0 and Evelyn Chelstrom singled and advanced to third where she scored on a wild pitch to give Kentucky a 5-0 lead. Kentucky got one more run when Hunter Sparks scored on an error.Lucy Kalat came in to pitch for Bristol, taking over for starter Ava Lefurgey, and after giving up a walk, Kalat got Edge to pop out to end the inning.But Kentucky scored nine more runs in the top of the fourth inning, with Presley Roberts’ two-run single giving the Central team a 10-0 lead and a single by Knight putting Kentucky up 13-0. The Kentucky team tacked on two more runs before the inning ended.Bristol got its only run in the bottom of the fourth when Kalat singled and scored on an error. The game was ended after four innings due to the mercy rule.
