Bristol Rhythm AFC owners talk successful season

BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) – What began as an idea pitched to the Smith family in 2022 by local soccer enthusiasts has blossomed into a standout chapter for Bristol Rhythm AFC, reaching a peak just three seasons after its inception and setting the stage for an exciting run in 2024. Matt Smith serves as President, and Diane Smith is the General Manager; together they are co-owners who shared insights with News Channel 11 about the team, its ascent, and the National Premier Soccer League (NSPL).
The NSPL sits at the top tier of the United States men’s amateur soccer pyramid, roughly two decades old. While the league is considered amateur and players do not receive pay, it maintains professional-style standards, according to Diane Smith. “People will loosely use the term semiprofessional to describe the league,” she explained.
Matt Smith credited head coach Dave Neijenhuis for this year’s success. A Tusculum College alum, Neijenhuis leveraged his coaching network and his knowledge of the local area to recruit and develop players, building a cohesive unit in a relatively short period. “What Dave has done is that he built a culture in a short amount of time,” Matt noted. “This team has a great rapport.” He added that the team’s success stems from every player buying into the mission, emphasizing that it’s the players’ collective effort, in partnership with the coaching staff, that drives results.
Community support fuels Bristol Rhythm AFC, contributing to an undefeated season and conference leadership. Diane acknowledged that cultivating a strong culture is challenging with a shortened season, but this year’s emphasis was on forging relationships before the competition began. She described the year as a direct outcome of that camaraderie. “We highly attribute some of the success to that because these players want to play hard for each other, because they have such and respect for one another,” she said.
In the week leading up to a recent game, the Rhythm played a midweek match on Wednesday, July 8, which went to penalty kicks around 10:30 p.m. Despite the late finish, the team carried that momentum into the Southeastern Conference competition later in the week. “They were really driven to get the hardware,” Matt observed. “You could tell last night by their effort they were not going to lose.”
Diane highlighted the impact of devoted fans on the team’s performance. “One of the biggest compliments we received this season came from an international supporter who said, ‘This is the closest experience I’ve had to European football since I’ve been in the United States,’” she recalled. “So our crowd, our fans, our supporters—they deserve this so much because they have stuck with us even when results weren’t what they are now.”
Bristol Rhythm AFC is set to host a quarterfinal matchup, underscoring the program’s growing prominence and the community’s enthusiasm as the team continues its quest for postseason glory. The ongoing story of Bristol Rhythm AFC is one of local talent, dedicated leadership, and a fanbase that has helped elevate a community-driven project into a competitive force within the NSPL.
