British wildcard Fery stuns Cobolli to reach semi-finals

British wildcard Arthur Fery is set to vie for a place in the Wimbledon final after extending his extraordinary run with a stunning win over world No. 10 Flavio Cobolli, in front of an electric Centre Court crowd. Until this week, Fery, ranked 114, had never progressed beyond the second round at a major tournament. Yet on a sun-drenched afternoon, he dismantled the French Open runner-up and ninth seed Cobolli with a 6-4, 7-6(7-4), 6-0 scoreline. The 23-year-old collapsed to the turf as the stands saluted him, becoming the first men’s wildcard to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals in 25 years. The last wildcard to make it this far was Goran Ivanišević, who went on to win the title.
While Fery’s win over former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov on his Centre Court debut two days earlier had left him in disbelief, this triumph saw him relish the roar of the appreciative crowd. His performance against Italy’s Cobolli was masterful, marked by a calm, unflustered temperament that belied his lack of extensive experience at this level.
Following a day that will be remembered as one of the greatest in his career, as nearly 15,000 home fans cheered him on, Fery will now prepare to face French Open champion Alexander Zverev in Friday’s semi-finals.
