The Cincinnati Reds selected Brodie Purcell with the 362nd overall pick in the 2026 MLB draft, making him the seventh Seminole to be drafted. Purcell spent only one season in Tallahassee after beginning his collegiate career with the USC Trojans. He was one of two USC transfers that Link Jarrett added over the offseason, with outfielder Brayden Dowd being chosen by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the third round.
During his time with the Seminoles, Purcell appeared in 23 games, posting a 5-2 record, three saves, and a 4.97 ERA across 38 innings. Opponents hit just .207 against him, as he surrendered 21 runs on 29 hits and 21 walks while piling up 58 strikeouts. Purcell proved to be a crucial arm for Florida State during the Tallahassee Regional, earning the win in both of the Seminoles’ games against Northern Illinois and Coastal Carolina. He delivered a flawless inning against Coastal Carolina before stepping in for 3 1/3 scoreless innings versus NIU the following day, allowing only one hit and one walk while punching out seven to seal the victory.
Hailing from Aliso Viejo, California, Purcell spent two seasons at USC, where he went 5-2 with four saves in 50 appearances. The right-handed pitcher posted a 2.89 ERA and held opponents to a .194 batting average over 71 2/3 innings, striking out 82 hitters. Purcell stands as the fifth Florida State pitcher to be drafted this year, joining Wes Mendes, Bryson Moore, Trey Beard, and Cole Stokes on the list of Seminoles chosen in 2026.
