Brooks Koepka withdraws from RBC Canadian Open with hand injury before final round

Brooks Koepka has withdrawn from the RBC Canadian Open ahead of Sunday’s final round because of a hand injury, the PGA Tour said. The 36-year-old was tied for 32nd at 6 under after a 72 on Saturday, which caused him to slide 25 places down the leaderboard. He entered Saturday’s round just two shots behind the leader after shooting a 64 on Thursday and a 68 on Friday. Following his Saturday round, Koepka received treatment on his left arm and elbow, later informing reporters that he was having trouble gripping his club. “Yeah, I don’t know what it is,” Koepka told Golf Digest. “I’m struggling to grip the club with my ring finger and pinkie finger, so I can’t grip it.” So the club would just kind of slip from my fingers—they’d go all numb and loose. At the time, Koepka made no mention of withdrawing, believing that he and his team would be able to identify the problem and take the necessary steps to fix it so he could keep playing. Clearly, that never occurred, and it’s possible the situation deteriorated during the night. Tee times at TPC Toronto were moved up on Sunday due to weather concerns. Koepka said his grip problems impacted his swing during his warm-up and again when he started the third round. According to him, his hand felt fine before arriving at the course, but the grip issues started once he began warming up. A trainer stayed with him throughout the round and provided treatment on the 11th hole.
