The brother of longtime NFL defensive lineman Calais Campbell, Ciarre Campbell, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with his mother Nateal Campbell’s death, according to jail records. Ciarre, 41, was booked at Fulton County Jail on charges including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife. The arrest followed the Campbell family’s statement confirming their mother’s death, in which they expressed devastation and asked for privacy to grieve. The family stated that their mother, 71-year-old Nateal Campbell, had reunited with their father, Chuck, in God’s hands as they grieved privately.
Lt. Christopher Butler told WSB-TV in Atlanta that police received a welfare call from a concerned family member, and responding officers found Nateal Campbell deceased. Butler did not disclose who made the call. He noted that the location had previously been the subject of calls, including a possible arson incident in April, and mentioned there had been indications of possible mental health issues with an individual.
Calais Campbell, 39, is approaching his 19th NFL season. Widely regarded as one of the finest defensive linemen of his era, he was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round. His accolades include an All-Pro selection, six Pro Bowl appearances, and a spot on the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team, along with being named the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2019. After playing the 2025 season with the Cardinals, Calais signed with the Baltimore Ravens in May, marking his second stint with the team.
