​TAMPA, FLA.. ― There’s not too many players remaining on the Browns who remember Baker Mayfield as a teammate. Safety Grant Delpit is one of just two who fits that bill.Delpit was a 23-year-old second-year pro in Mayfield’s final season in Cleveland in 2021. He turns 29 on Sept. 20, the same day he will share the field with Mayfield, now the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, in a critical Week 2 game in Tampa.So Delpit knows what to expect when he faces his former teammate. He also has a birthday wish he’s hoping Mayfield can deliver.Subscribe to Browns Insider newsletter”Yeah, I mean, he’s going to, quarterbacks like that, they try to try you,” Delpit said this week. “He’s been on the Browns, we’ve seen how it could go one of two ways, you know what I’m saying? So hopefully we do what we got to do as a defense and get some things done, man. It’s my birthday on Sunday, so I hope I get a gift.”Delpit and cornerback Denzel Ward are the only two current Browns players who were also teammates of Mayfield in the former No. 1 overall pick’s last year with the franchise. They will be two players who will play a critical part in preventing their former teammate from getting a high level of revenge on the team that jettisoned him in a July, 2022, trade to the Carolina Panthers.The player who was the reason why Mayfield, who owns the franchise’s only playoff win in the post-1999 expansion era, was deemed expendable will play an even more critical part in the game. That’s because it may be Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson’s last opportunity to save his starting job,Watson, whom the Browns acquired from the Houston Texans in March, 2022, will be starting just his 22nd game in 70 possible game since landing in Cleveland. Considering the way his 21st start went, and the prospects of a vitriolic response from Browns fans at the Sept. 26 home opener against the Carolina Panthers, a change at quarterback to backup Shedeur Sanders could be waiting in the near future.Not that Watson, whether it’s reality or not, has entertained that thought.”I think personally, I think all that is for the media,” Watson said this week. “I think the media has this expectation that I’m supposed to throw 400 yards and five touchdowns every week. So until that happens, I guess it’s going to be the same situation. So again, my job is to make sure I’m operating well so we can try to get a win and keep moving forward from there.”The problem for Watson has been that his arrival has, essentially, prevented the Browns from moving forward from where they had been when Mayfield was the quarterback.
