Bryson DeChambeau’s golf labelled ‘terrible’ and ‘absolutely atrocious’ as he’s backed to miss the cut at The Open

Johnson Wagner has indicated that he expects Bryson DeChambeau to miss the cut at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, arguing that the LIV Golf star has long faced the biggest challenge of any major at this specific event. With the final major of the 2026 season approaching, DeChambeau faces enormous pressure. The 32-year-old has already missed the cut at The Masters, the PGA Championship, and the US Open this year, marking a sobering stretch for a player who previously seemed to have cracked the code for competing at golf’s four biggest championships.
Entering 2026, DeChambeau had put together a run of six top-10 finishes in his last eight major starts, a streak that included his second US Open title at Pinehurst in 2024. Since the start of 2024, however, his major record has shifted to six top-10s and five missed cuts, a pattern that has drawn close scrutiny. During a discussion on CBS Sports, Wagner suggested another weekend off could be on the cards for DeChambeau in Southport.
“I was going to point out Bryson because he doesn’t need to win this next major; he needs to make a cut. He has been terrible. It’s been absolutely atrocious. The only time he’s played well at an Open Championship in recent years was last year, and that was only the last three rounds when the wind died down,” Wagner remarked. “He is not built for The Open Championship. I would say there’s a much better chance of him missing the cut at Royal Birkdale than him even just making the cut.”
Curiously, DeChambeau’s Open Championship record, on paper, isn’t dramatically worse than his performance in the other three majors. It remains the only major where he has never finished inside the top five. Notably, whenever he has broken into the top 10 at The Open, it has occurred in the final round, underscoring how challenging he has found this particular major.
Many will recall how well he navigated the course to make the cut at Royal Portrush twelve months earlier, a standout performance that still sits within a broader pattern—DeChambeau has as many top-10 finishes at The Open as he does at The Masters and the US Open. He has also missed three cuts at Augusta National, the PGA Championship, and The Open. While he has made substantial improvements at The Masters, and his two US Open titles demonstrate his strength at that venue, his Open Championship record does not appear dramatically weaker than his record at the other majors overall.
