​The Heisman Trophy has largely become a quarterback award for the best team in the country, simple as that. It is hard to argue the premise that another player on the best teams in the country deserves the trophy over the guy who touches the ball every play.It’s a tough balance to strike but this year is going to be really interesting to watch it. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is regarded as the best player in the country without much argument. There isn’t anything on the football field that anyone with eyes would say, “ya I’d rather have someone else’s skill here.”He is the fastest, the quickest, the strongest, has the best hands, is the most physical, most fearless, and the most competitive. He is everything that you want in a player and he is poised for an incredible season.Now, if he stays healthy and puts up gaudy numbers next year and the Buckeyes are winning, he is going to be in the biggest competition with his quarterback, Julian Sayin.The truth is that when that most likely does happen, neither guy is going to care about it. With a small smirk, he said, “Best player.”That is the way that it should be, and the truth is that in most years, the best player is also the best quarterback. However, since 2000, there have been just five non-quarterbacks who have won the award. Of those five, only two of them were wide receivers, including Travis Hunter, who was a wide receiver and cornerback. The odds are further stacked against Smith because, since the invention of the award in 1935, there have been just five wide receivers who have won the award. To win this trophy as a wide receiver is virtually impossible, but if there were ever a guy to do it, it would be the alien that is Jeremiah Smith.If everything goes well for Jeremiah Smith, then he is going to exit next year as the undisputed best wide receiver in the history of Ohio State, bar none. He will hold every record, and he will have done it in just three years. He will also be staring down a top-three selection in next year’s Draft.Everything is on the table for Smith next year, let’s just hope that a Heisman Trophy is, too.
