Bucks GM Explains Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade

By admin — In News — July 9, 2026

Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst explained the reasoning behind the franchise’s surprising decision to trade Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat. The Bucks and Heat had agreed to a blockbuster deal that would send Antetokounmpo to South Beach several weeks earlier, with the move only becoming official once the NBA’s roster‑transaction moratorium ended on July 6. The deal paired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. with a package the Bucks received: Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, rookie Nate Ament, two additional first-round picks, one second-round pick, and a pick swap. It marked the end of Antetokounmpo’s remarkable 13-year run in Milwaukee, during which he helped lead the Bucks to the 2021 NBA Championship, earned two MVP awards, and established himself as perhaps the greatest player in the franchise’s history.
On Wednesday, Horst addressed the media to detail why the organization chose to move Antetokounmpo to the Heat in exchange for a young core and a number of draft assets. “No one’s sitting here today saying we’re a better team because Giannis is gone. He’s one of the greatest players to ever play the game and certainly the greatest in the franchise’s history. We’ve enjoyed an incredible level of success,” Horst said, according to ESPN. “For us, it was about the opportunity to build again and to establish a foundation anew. Can we set something in place with a new coach and seize a chance to truly build from a position of strength on a roster that hopefully makes our city proud, makes the franchise proud, and positions us to be competitive? And can we sustain that level of competition year after year?”
Horst emphasized that the Bucks were not compelled to trade their star player. He insisted that the decision was made because the organization believed it represented the correct path for both sides, even if it carried some risk. “This wasn’t a ‘have to’ situation. We genuinely believed we’d found a unique opportunity. We might be right or we might be wrong, but this is what we felt would be best for him and what he wants to pursue going forward, and what we want to pursue as a franchise going forward. If we could execute a trade that offered him a great opportunity and also provided us with a clearer path forward, then that’s what we would do,” Horst explained.
The Bucks endured a disappointing season, missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade, and subsequently moved on from head coach Doc Rivers after the year. With Antetokounmpo no longer in the mix, Milwaukee is set to look drastically different in the upcoming season as the franchise charts a new course without its longtime superstar. The upheaval signals a broader reboot aimed at returning the Bucks to competitive relevance and sustaining success over the long term, with Horst’s comments underscoring a commitment to building a new foundation while acknowledging the magnitude of the decision and Antetokounmpo’s extraordinary impact on the franchise.
