​With starting running back Bucky Irving back to full-health, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ running game should take a big step forward.But, one sneaky-good pickup for Tampa this offseason is adding Kenneth Gainwell, who signed a two-year, $14 million deal after a standout season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.Thus far at training camp, newly hired offensive coordinator Zac Robinson has been playing both Irving and Gainwell together at the same time, employing the two speedy backs against the Bucs’ defense.This look, known as a “pony package” or 21 personnel, should keep defenses on their heels and give starting quarterback Baker Mayfield easy outlets out of the backfield or in the slot.For Irving, who burst onto the scene as a rookie two years ago, a lingering shoulder injury kept him limited to ten games played last season.But, he has looked like his dynamic, healthy self throughout the offseason, with Pewter Report noting his long plays in camp out of the 21 personnel.”The biggest run of the day was out of the pony package, when Irving took the carry on a delayed handoff, accelerated through the middle of the field, and was able to speed down the field,” Pewter Report wrote. “Not only would it have been a game-changing run, but the “Bucky, Bucky, Bucky” chants made it feel like a regular-season moment.”In 2024, Irving recorded 1,514 total yards and eight touchdowns, effectively taking over Rachaad White’s role as the RB1.According to PFSN’s running back impact metric, Irving was the highest-graded rookie back over the last five seasons (88.5), beating out Steelers rookie tailback Najee Harris by a significant margin (81.0).But, he isn’t the only one turning heads at camp, as ESPN Jeremy Fowler noted Gainwell’s early production last Thursday.”Sometimes alongside Bucky Irving in two-tailback “pony” sets, Gainwell made plays all over the field Thursday, particularly in the passing game. His presence is obvious, and he’s usually one of the first names mentioned when talking to people with the team about the offense,” Fowler said. “Irving is a proven contributor and is eager to rebound after a down season.
