BVB lose Super Cup to Bayern MunichWith just one change from the dress rehearsal against AS Roma – Waldemar Anton for Filippo Mane – head coach Niko Kovac sent out his team for the Supercup. Joane Gadou and Konstantinos Karetsas made their competitive debuts for BVB.Dortmund started boldly: Julian Ryerson won the ball, Konstantinos Karetsas reacted quickly and picked out Daniel Svensson with a fine pass. But his cross was cut out by the defense. Bayern Munich had more possession in the opening stages, but did not manage a shot on goal. After more than ten minutes, Dortmund seemed to be taking control of the game. Serhou Guirassy got his first shot away, but Samuele Inacio had flicked on Karetsas’s earlier cross from an offside position, and Guirassy’s effort went over the bar anyway. After that, however, the game tilted toward the visitors, who produced several shots. The most dangerous came from Aleksandar Pavlovic, but Gregor Kobel gathered the ball safely (14′). During this spell, BVB made it into the box once when Kosta Karetsas switched play to Julian Ryerson. Inacio expected a teammate behind him, and his pass rolled harmlessly away (24′).Instead, the visitors’ dominance paid off: after a setup from Michel Olise, Nathaniel Brown scored from 16 meters out in a central position to make it 1-0 for Munich. BVB almost responded immediately, but Svensson swung and missed completely when left unmarked after a square pass from Ramy Bensebaini (32′).Four minutes later, Gregor Kobel prevented 2-0 with a brilliant save, tipping a shot from Luis Diaz around the post. The ball did end up in the net from a Bensebaini header, but it was narrowly offside (43′). Just before the break, the visitors had several more clear-cut chances: Brown (43′) and Olise (45′) were both denied at first – but then Olise drove into the box and scored from a tight angle to make it 2-0.After the restart, it took five minutes for Dortmund to begin pushing for a way back into the game. New signing Giannis Konstantelias, brought on at halftime, made an immediate impression with an overhead-style effort (52′). In the same minute, his Greek national teammate Karetsas almost set up the goal to pull one back, but Neuer pushed the ball past the post with a save. The two then failed to make the most of a promising counterattack shortly afterward. Karetsas’s night then came to an end. Joey Veerman came on for him and also made his debut in black and yellow.Bayern Munich were no longer as threatening in attack as they had been in the first half and only managed one effort through Harry Kane. His attempt in the 66th minute flew just over the bar.Dortmund’s attacking efforts, meanwhile, began to have an effect: Fabio Silva slid home a quick move down the left to make it 2-1 (75′). Two minutes later, Kane could have restored the two-goal cushion, but his shot drifted just over the goal.Just before the final whistle, events came thick and fast: Kobel saved from Pavlovic and Olis
