The Round of 16 is complete, leaving eight teams and a bracket that’s starting to take shape, even as the overall leaderboard has undergone a dramatic reshuffle. The knockout stage has shaken up the standings considerably. At the top, clustercore led after the group stage in seventh place, BarbaraGJuve sat in 11th, and Fefu was at the very bottom. Conversely, Haaandyvandy, who finished fifth in the group stage, has fallen to last place through the knockouts, while Dino1995 has dropped from second overall to second-to-last.
Several players who were in the top half of the table at the end of the group phase managed to stay there after the Round of 16. Notable examples include mmmCheese, who moved from third to fourth; Fawkey, from fourth to fifth; LaMattonellaDiDelPiero, remaining sixth in both stages; and rjr96, slipping from first to seventh. Yet the knockout rounds have been a hotbed of turnover.
The point values illustrate the big shifts: group-stage points range from 7 to 10, while the Round of 32 yields 45 points and the Round of 16 yields 90 points. The magnitude of movement is closely tied to how accurately brackets anticipated the actual advancements. For instance, clustercore correctly forecasted France, Mexico, Morocco, Spain, USA, Belgium, Brazil, Norway, England, Argentina, Switzerland, and Portugal to reach the Round of 16—earning 540 points, which is nearly 50% more than the leader’s group-stage total. They followed up by predicting France, Morocco, Spain, Belgium, England, Argentina, and Switzerland to advance, adding another 630 points. Interestingly, their bracket was remarkably precise: they predicted seven of the eight quarterfinalists and correctly anticipated three of the four Round of 16 matchups—missing only England versus Norway, though they correctly foresaw Brazil facing Norway in the Round of 16. In short, their bracket proved exceptionally accurate through the Round of 16.
On the statistical side, the group as a whole performed well in the Round of 32, with over 70% of brackets correctly forecasting the advancing teams. Every bracket predicted four teams to move forward: England, France, Portugal, and Spain. Argentina was predicted to advance by seventeen of the eighteen brackets. Paraguay’s advancement to the Round of 16 was a rarity, with just three brackets getting them through, and only five brackets correctly predicting Egypt’s advancement. Every bracket also anticipated Spain’s quarterfinal appearance. Argentina’s progression was predicted by seventeen of the eighteen brackets, and predictions for France and England were strong, at about 83.3% and 77.8% respectively, but this marked a noticeable drop from the Round of 32, where four correct picks were universal. This decline is reflected in the overall Group Round accuracy, which fell from 70% in the Round of 32 to 58% in the Round of 16. Only three participants anticipated Switzerland reaching the quarterfinals, with clustercore among the few exceptions.
In short, the bracket accuracy has been uneven, with the Round of 32 offering a higher rate of correct predictions than the Round of 16, and a few standout brackets demonstrating exceptional foresight even as many others struggled to keep pace with the knockout twists.
