Caitlin Clark said Thursday that she has spoken with Kelsey Mitchell since the Indiana Fever’s season ended and that every player under contract will recruit Mitchell in free agency.Mitchell played 2026 on a one-year, $1.4 million supermax contract. Indiana extended her a core qualifying offer before she signed on April 11, and the deal made her the first Fever player paid more than $1 million for a season.The second overall pick in the 2018 draft has spent all nine of her WNBA seasons in Indianapolis. She is an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Mitchell also tested free agency after the 2024 season before returning to Indiana.Mitchell joined the WNBA’s 5,000-point club on June 4 with 25 points against Atlanta. She averaged 24.7 points, second in the league. Her 1,086 total points set a WNBA single-season record, according to CBS Sports, and she led the league at 45% from 3-point range.She tied the league record for consecutive 20-point games with 29 points in an Aug. 18 win at Toronto, then broke it. Late in the season, home crowds at Gainbridge Fieldhouse chanted “M-V-P” for her.Mitchell, Clark, and Aliyah Boston were each named All-Star starters on July 2. Mitchell was the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for July.Clark averaged 22.3 points, third in the league. ESPN listed the pair as the highest-scoring teammates in league history.Clark Wants Mitchell Back in IndianaA new deal would give Mitchell a 10th season with Indiana, Clark said.”As far as Kelsey and our future with the organization, I think she knows how much I love her, and we’ve talked since the season has ended, and there’s nobody I would want to share the backcourt with other than her,” Clark said. “I think we had the best season of any backcourt in the WNBA in the league’s history, what we were able to do, and I often tell her, I feel like I have the best seat in the house every single night. I get to watch you do your thing and be right next to you and be on the other side of the ball with you.””So I know this organization is, we’re going to work our butt off to get her back,” Clark continued. “We’re going to recruit her as hard as we can. Every player that is signed to a contract is going to recruit her as hard as we can. We need her. We love her. And I think more than anything, Kelsey’s a really great person, and I love getting to be in the locker room with her, and obviously you guys have got to know her a little bit, and she’s just a good soul. This organization and these fans have really rallied around her and have supported her, and more than anything, I hope she comes back here and the arena is chanting MVP for her again, because that’s what she deserves.””She’s been with this organization, what, nine years? It would be, if I’m not mistaken, ten if we were able to sign her back,” Clark added. “So that’s certainly our goal. That’s our number one priority.
