SAN DIEGO (AP) — Luis Campusano went deep, and Miguel Andujar collected three doubles—his career best in a game along with two RBIs—as the San Diego Padres defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-4 on Wednesday night to pull back to .500. Michael King earned the win for San Diego, improving to 6-7 after delivering six solid innings. The Padres matched a season high with 10 runs, and the victory marked just their third win in 12 games.
King allowed one run on four hits, fanning four and issuing two walks. The Diamondbacks had taken an early lead, but trouble mounted for them later in the game. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was ejected by plate umpire Willie Traynor in the fifth inning after arguing a balk call against Jose Cabrera that placed runners on second and third with one out. Xander Bogaerts followed with a single to left that scored both runners, giving Arizona a 4-1 advantage. The ejection was Lovullo’s 24th career ejection.
Campusano provided the spark by homering to left-center off reliever Taylor Clarke at the start of the six-run sixth inning. It was Campusano’s fourth homer of the season. In the inning, Sung-Mun Song, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Jackson Merrill each added RBI singles with one out to increase San Diego’s lead.
Andujar was a constant thorn for Arizona, finishing with RBI doubles in both the fourth and seventh frames, and he scored twice overall in the game. The offense continued to churn in support of King, who allowed only one run in six innings before handing off to the bullpen.
Tommy Troy contributed a two-run homer off Ron Marinaccio with two outs in the seventh, his fourth of the year, capping the scoring for the night.
Cabrera started for the Diamondbacks and took the loss, yielding four runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. The final score reflected how the Padres were able to string together multi-run innings after the early setback, turning the game in their favor.
The Diamondbacks and Padres were set for the series finale on Thursday night with Merrill Kelly starting for Arizona against Griffin Canning for San Diego. Kelly carried a 6-8 record with a 5.71 ERA, while Canning stood 1-6 with a 6.71 ERA entering the matchup. The teams had entered the night 14 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and five games out of the third wild-card spot, with three teams ahead of them, keeping the pressure on both sides as they sought a late-season push.
