Canaries suffer doubleheader sweep

The Sioux Falls Canaries experienced a tough doubleheader in Kansas City on Friday, falling to the Kansas City Monarchs in both games and extending their skid in the head-to-head series. In game one, the Canaries dropped a walk-off decision, 3-2, after a late misstep by Sioux Falls allowed the winning run to cross the plate in the bottom of the seventh. Kansas City wasted no time getting on the board, plating a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning and adding an RBI double in the third to claim a lead. The Canaries battled back in the sixth when Anthony Hall launched a two-run homer to tie the game, giving Sioux Falls a glimmer of momentum. Shortstop Grady Mee made a leaping catch with the go-ahead runner stationed at second base to end the bottom of the frame and preserve the deadlock, highlighting the drama of the contest. Despite the strong defense and timely offense, Sioux Falls could not capitalize on a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh, and the Monarchs managed to capitalize when the first two batters reached safely in the bottom half. A miscue on a sacrifice bunt to third base allowed the winning run to score from second, sealing the walk-off loss for the Canaries.
On the mound, Garrett Martin delivered a solid six-inning performance, conceding two runs on two hits while striking out five. Josh Rehwaldt provided the offensive spark for Sioux Falls with a multi-hit effort, finishing with a pair of hits to lead the team in that department.
In game two, Kansas City continued its strong offense, blasting three home runs en route to a 6-2 victory. The Monarchs jumped ahead with a leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the second, followed by a three-run blast and a two-run shot in the third, delivering a commanding early lead. Sioux Falls fought back, scoring a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI sacrifice fly from TJ Racherbaumer and adding another on a Joe Vos RBI fielder’s choice in the sixth, but the Canaries could not close the gap as Kansas City was able to maintain its advantage.
With the doubleheader sweep, Sioux Falls dropped to 26-25 on the season. The Canaries are set to return to action on Saturday at 6:35 p.m., looking to bounce back and reset their momentum for the remainder of the schedule.
