The Diamondbacks placed outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the injured list with a strained adductor muscle in his right leg. Catcher Adrian Del Castillo was recalled to replace him on the roster.Gurriel, who started his season late after returning from major knee surgery, is in the throes of a rough year at the plate. He is hitting just .207/.254/.287 with two homers in 174 at-bats.Del Castillo was sent back to Reno earlier this month and swung the bat well while there, going 11 for 22 (.500) with five doubles, two homers and three walks. He homered in his final game with the Diamondbacks before being optioned, but had otherwise largely struggled to produce at the plate, posting a .185/.244/.311 line in 151 at-bats.The Diamondbacks announced an additional roster move, selecting the contract of right-hander Gerardo Carrillo and optioning him to Triple-A Reno.Carrillo, who signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks in December, had an opt-out clause that the Diamondbacks were able to prevent by adding him to their 40-man roster. In 32 games with Reno, Carrillo has a 4.25 ERA with 56 strikeouts and 27 walks in 42 1/3 innings.Ryne Nelson, Jordan Lawlar, A.J. Puk health updatesRight-hander Ryne Nelson received good news from a recent MRI and has been cleared to begin a throwing program, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said on Saturday, July 18.Nelson, who has been shelved since mid-June due to elbow discomfort, underwent imaging on Friday, July 17, that showed “a lot of improvement,” Lovullo said.“Things have been resolved there in a way where we feel like the build-up can begin, which is great news,” Lovullo said.Where that takes him — and when — were things Lovullo did not say.One possibility could be for Nelson to come back as a reliever, a path that would expedite his return. Lovullo said the club has been discussing that idea but that nothing had been decided.“We’re not sure what that buildup will look like,” he said. Two others who underwent MRIs on Friday — outfielder Jordan Lawlar and lefty A.J. Puk — did not receive such encouraging updates.Lawlar’s right hamstring strain still showed up on the imaging, Lovullo said, but it did show enough healing that he is able to ramp up his activities, to an extent.“He has been cleared for all baseball activities with the exception of running full speed,” Lovullo said. “Being able to get on the field and take some at-bats, possibly live at-bats, should bridge that process and push it a little bit quicker into the space where when he is fully available to run he will be a little bit closer to ready to joining us.”Puk’s MRI showed a still unresolved issue with his shoulder capsule, and he will seek a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the same Los Angeles-based surgeon that will also render a second opinion for right-hander Zac Gallen’s elbow next week.Cardinals at Diamondbacks, 1:10 p.m., Cox, Ch. 34Diamondbacks RHP Brandon Pfaadt (3-1, 4.70) vs. Cardinals RH
