Castine Properties escapes with 73-64 victory in YMCA men’s league

   ​PLATTSBURGH — Castine Properties faced a stiff test Thursday night in what many observers called one of the most memorable games in the league’s five-year history. The Property men fought hard but never managed to push past a four-point edge in the first half as Akey Acres erupted from long range, showcasing sensational outside shooting. After trailing 24-20, Akey Acres surged and exploded to a 39-28 lead, only for Castine to mount a late push, scoring the final eight points of the half to close within 39-36 at the break.
The second half followed a similar script: one team would grab the advantage, only for the other to rally. Akey Acres showed the upper hand for a stretch, at one point holding double-digit leads, but the four-time league champions weren’t ready to concede. With 4:39 remaining, Castine Properties clung to a 63-60 edge. Akey Acres had a golden opportunity to tie in the closing minute, but a missed shot coupled with a costly technical foul allowed Castine to extend their lead to 69-64. A late steal on the inbounds sealed the win for Castine.
Matt Farbotko led Castine with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Josh Burgin delivered a standout performance with 16 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Josh Sand joined the double-figure club with 11 points and added five rebounds and strong defense. Jamie Davison contributed five rebounds, five assists and three steals in a well-rounded effort.
For Akey Acres, Caleb Akey posted a game-high 22 points, including six three-pointers. Tom Peterson and Brady Yando each poured in 15 points, with Yando adding three triples and four rebounds. Zack Ziemer led the team in rebounds with six.
The result improves Castine Properties’ record to 6-0 on the season, while Akey Acres slips to 4-2. This clash underscored the league’s depth and competitiveness, delivering a high-intensity, back-and-forth affair that kept fans on the edge of their seats and highlighted why these teams remain among the league’s elite.
