Celtics send clear message over Jayson Tatum trade rumors

The Boston Celtics clearly sent a bold message with their handling of Jayson Tatum trade rumors, a narrative that first gained traction after The Sporting News reported on the matter. The Sporting News is presented here as a preferred source by clicking the link provided. The Celtics stunned the league last week by trading Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Paul George and a collection of draft picks. The move followed Boston’s collapse in the first round against Philadelphia, where they held a 3-1 series lead but were undone as Brown hit a rough stretch, shooting 28-for-67 in the final three losses.
That postseason exit lit a fuse on the trade chatter around Boston, with teams across the league weighing offers to pry Jayson Tatum away. Yet, per ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Celtics shut those discussions down cold. “Over the last three, four weeks while this Jaylen Brown stuff was going on, teams were calling the Celtics on Jayson Tatum,” Charania remarked. “Their answer was hard stop, ‘No, we’re not trading Jayson Tatum. He’s untouchable. He’s not on the table.’” Charania also underscored the different treatment of the two stars: “Jaylen Brown, different story—open for business, ready to trade him, give us your best offer. So that’s the dichotomy of both of those situations.”
Even with Tatum still returning from a torn Achilles, teams pressed to acquire him despite his interrupted late-season rhythm. He had managed to return for the tail end of the regular season and a brief playoff run, but his form appeared uneven. In the regular season, he averaged 21.8 points on 41.1 percent shooting, figures well below his typical standards. Yet in the playoffs, he found his stride, increasing to 23.3 points on 47.5 percent shooting.
From the Celtics’ perspective, the logic of keeping Tatum makes sense on several fronts. He is just 28 years old and is locked into a massive five-year, $314 million supermax contract. With Brown no longer in the lineup, Tatum emerges as the clear cornerstone for whatever the Celtics pursue next, regardless of injury concerns. Brown, meanwhile, presented a different kind of calculus. Leaked reports suggested friction on-court between him and Tatum, which contributed to his perceived expendability. Trading a star who recently helped the franchise win a title while still having years left on his contract is unusual, but Boston drew a firm line against shipping Tatum while he was still recovering from a significant injury.
Charania emphasized that Celtics executives never treated the two scenarios as comparable, despite the noise surrounding the Tatum rumors. The front office’s stance remained consistent: Tatum is off the table, untouchable, and not part of any negotiations right now. As the trade chatter swirled, the Celtics’ decision to move Brown and stand pat with Tatum sent a clear message to the league—this franchise views Tatum as its enduring pillar, and any future construction around him will be pursued with that certainty in mind.
