Champion Sinner wary of Zverev before Wimbledon final

Recent history suggests Jannik Sinner should be entirely confident of retaining his Wimbledon title, but this Alexander Zverev presents a different challenge. Sinner, currently the world number one, is chasing a rare achievement: becoming only the 10th man in the Open era to defend the Wimbledon men’s singles crown after beating Carlos Alcaraz to lift the trophy last summer. The 24-year-old Italian has dominated Zverev in their recent meetings, winning all nine encounters and the last six without dropping a set. Yet he is cautious about the threat posed by the German, who finally clinched his first Grand Slam title at the French Open last month, ending a long wait.
“Whatever happened in the past between me and him, it happened. In between, he won a Grand Slam in Paris, which gave him a lot of confidence,” Sinner said. “He is a tough opponent to face. He was tough before, but now he’s even more so. He’s very relaxed on court at the moment. I’ll try to do my best, but it’s going to be very, very tough—very different from all the other matches we have played.”
For so long, Zverev seemed destined to be the best player never to win a major title. That narrative changed when he defeated Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in the Roland Garros final, his 41st appearance at a major, ensuring he would no longer carry that burden. “I stay focused. I stay hungry. I want more. I want to keep playing at the top level and keep winning. On Sunday I have another big chance,” Zverev said. “Once you win a major, you know how to do it, and you feel like you can do it again. You have this feeling inside you.”
Zverev and Sinner have emerged as the tour’s most in-form players this season, each recording 40 or more wins in 2026, and that form is reflected in the rankings as Zverev is poised to rise to world number two on Monday. Sinner, meanwhile, is intent on securing his fifth major title after a devastating display that ended Novak Djokovic’s latest bid for a historic 25th major last Friday. The Italian was in ruthless form as he dismantled Djokovic in straight sets, a performance that underscored his status as Djokovic’s chief obstacle to further Grand Slam glory.
Sinner arrived at Wimbledon after a relatively quiet return from the French Open, where he battled through a grueling stretch of heat and fatigue that culminated in a shock loss to Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo despite holding a two-set to one lead and 5-1. Yet, much like the resilience he showed after the heartbreaking defeat to Alcaraz in last year’s French Open final, Sinner has again responded with a surge toward potential glory.
Since the start of the 2024 season, Sinner has reached seven Grand Slam finals and has led the tour in 2026 for most singles titles, buoyed by his mastery of the Masters 1000 circuit, where he captured all five events in an otherwise stellar year. In the semifinals, Zverev defeated British wildcard Arthur Fery in straight sets, continuing his own run of form as he bids to close the gap at the top of the rankings.
The upcoming Wimbledon clash promises to be a tactical duel between two of the most complete players on tour, each having demonstrated the ability to raise their level at the biggest stages. Sinner’s precision, relentless consistency, and recent ability to close out high-stakes matches will be tested against Zverev’s tranquil demeanor, booming serve, and hard-won experience of winning a major. As they prepare to face off, fans can anticipate a match that could define the early trajectory of the grass-court season and shape the course of the coming months for both players.
