In recent weeks, the Golden State Warriors have been touted as one of the leading contenders to sign LeBron James in free agency, with many suggesting they may have been as driven as any team to woo the future Hall of Famer. Yet in the most recent days, it appears their prospects might have cooled somewhat. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported this week that, from what he’s heard, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers are currently viewed as the frontrunners for James.
Charania also explained to Stephen A. Smith that the Warriors might not rank highly on James’ list for a specific reason. “And I think the big draw for LeBron James with the Warriors would be, let’s see if there’s an avenue to be a package deal to the Warriors,” he said. “And so short of that, like, I don’t think the Warriors are up on that list. I think the Warriors believe they’re not up on that list unless they’re able to go package for Anthony Davis.”
Anthony Davis has been a name tied to the Warriors in trade rumors for some time. He was traded by the Dallas Mavericks to the Washington Wizards in February and, notably, helped James secure his most recent NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. However, it’s believed the Wizards aren’t eager to move him, and Davis is owed $58.46 million in the upcoming season, a factor that would complicate any potential deal.
Meanwhile, James maintains close friendships with Warriors stalwarts Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, but the Warriors’ overall roster is seen as top-heavy and aging. As free agency entered its second week, a sense remained that much of the league was in a cautious holding pattern as James weighed his options. Rich Paul, James’ longtime agent and confidant, indicated that as many as 12 teams had already reached out to discuss possibilities for the four-time MVP.
This report originally appeared on LeBron Wire. The shifting chatter around James’ next destination has kept fans and analysts alike watching closely, with many wondering not only where he might land, but what form his arrival could take for a franchise like the Warriors. The possibility of a package deal, whether involving Anthony Davis or another star, continues to color the ongoing free-agent landscape, even as teams tally cap space, roster fit, and strategic timelines.
