The Los Angeles Chargers may have lost more than just a defensive coordinator this offseason. According to linebacker Marlowe Wax, they lost one of the brightest football minds in the league.Appearing on The Press Box Online with Glenn Clark, Wax had nothing but high praise for former Bolts defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who left Los Angeles to become the Baltimore Ravens’ new head coach. While Minter has yet to coach his first game in Baltimore, Wax believes Ravens fans are about to see exactly why he was one of the league’s hottest coaching candidates and the successor to the legendary John Harbaugh.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”I think he’s gonna be everything that the city is looking for,” Wax said. “I mean, he’s a guru, he’s a genius.”Those aren’t compliments that are casually thrown around by players, especially one who spent just one season learning under Minter as a rookie. Wax described him as a coach who not only excels at constructing elite defenses but also connects with every player in the building, regardless of which side of the ball they play.”He’s gonna make sure the defense is flying around, but also he’s gonna be that coach that the offensive players can come to and talk to and just have fun with and have a conversation with,” Wax said. His ability to build relationships could be one of Minter’s greatest strengths as he transitions from coordinator to head coach. Wax believes players will respond because they’ll know their coach genuinely has their backs.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”They’re gonna feel comfortable when they’re stepping on the field,” Wax added. “They’re gonna feel as though their coach really has their back in any situation. They’re gonna really try to play for him because it’s gonna be a family-oriented organization now.”While culture is important, Wax made it clear that Minter’s football IQ is what truly separates him from many of his peers.”He’s gonna have those guys fired up coming every Sunday. He’s a genius. He’s gonna be the one calling the plays. He’s gonna be the one controlling everything and then make sure that the X’s and O’s are just exactly what they need to be.”According to Wax, Minter’s greatest gift is ensuring every player fully grasps the game through the same lens as the coaching staff. He expects Minter to establish leadership throughout the roster and create an environment where every player, from starters to the bottom of the depth chart, is prepared to execute at the same level.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement”I think just like the leaders on the team, they’re gonna be meeting with mentor and everything to get the guys from the top of the depth charts to bottom depth charts, so everybody sees the game the exact same way,” Wax said. For the Ravens, those comments should only add to the excitement surrounding Minter’s arrival. Baltimore is handing the keys to a coach with a reputation for innovation, communication and leadership. For the Chargers, however, Wax
