Charlie Woods, ahead of U.S. Junior, misses out on qualifying for U.S. Amateur

   ​Charlie Woods is heading to the U.S. Junior Amateur next week, his third start in the USGA championship. However, on Wednesday he came up short in qualifying for the biggest amateur event in the world.Woods carded a 5-over 76 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course on Wednesday, missing a spot at qualifying for the 126th U.S. Amateur by six shots. The top 13 golfers (with two alternates) advanced to the U.S. Amateur, set for Aug. 10-16 at Merion in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Hong Kong’s William Lisle and Lorenzo Pinili from Rochester Hills, Michigan, tied for medalist honors, shooting 4 under.Woods had a double on the sixth hole en route to a 40 on the front nine. Last month, he won a playoff to qualify for the U.S. Junior, which will be held at Saucon Valley next week. Woods has missed the cut in each of his first two starts at the U.S. Junior. As for his U.S. Amateur debut, he’ll have to wait another year.
