Benjamin’s defense of its Florida boys golf state championship took another step Tuesday as Charlie Woods claimed medalist honors and led the Buccaneers to the Class 1A-District 14 title at Champions Club at Summerfield in Stuart.Woods, a Benjamin senior and the son of Tiger Woods, fired a 2-under-par 69 and drained a 40-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to secure medalist honors. His performance helped power Benjamin to a team score of 290, good for a 15-stroke victory over runner-up Oxbridge Academy. The Buccaneers faced early pressure from both Oxbridge and King’s Academy but separated themselves on the back nine to claim another district championship and advance deeper into the postseason.”We got two good rounds out of Charlie and Brooks,” Benjamin coach Toby Harbeck said. “Charlie made a 40-foot putt on the last hole to win the individual title. Charlie shot a 69 and Brooks shot a 70. That’s what you want out of your No. 1 and No. 2.”More: How Charlie Woods fared in high school championship at Biltmore MiamiWoods was steady throughout the round, recording birdies on Nos. 4, 10, 13 and 18 while making par on 13 of the remaining 14 holes. His final birdie allowed him to edge teammate Brooks Colton, who carded a 1-under 70 after highlighting his round with an eagle on the fourth hole. The district championship came despite difficult conditions throughout the day.”It played really hard, long, and windy and rainy,” Harbeck said. “It was everything. So, I’m very pleased. You’re trying to move on each week and get to the finals, so that’s what we did. We’ve got to keep going forward.”Benjamin finished at 2-over as a team, well ahead of Oxbridge Academy (305) and King’s Academy (311).
