​Charlton Athletic captain Greg Docherty has left the club by mutual consent.The midfielder joined the Addicks in July 2024 and skippered the club to promotion from League One in his first season.He played 90 times for Charlton, scoring five goals, but is now free to find another club outside of the transfer window.”To be named captain of such an iconic football club was nothing short of a privilege,” Docherty, 29, told Charlton’s website.”I felt the weight and expectation that title carries, but I can wholeheartedly say I gave my absolute all to represent the club properly every single day with the utmost respect that I felt it deserved through the good and the bad moments.”I’ll always be grateful for my time at Charlton and everything the club has given me, but football moves fast and I’m now excited to see what the future holds.”The Scot, who counts Hamilton, Rangers, Hull, Shrewsbury and Hibernian among his former clubs, made his final Charlton appearance in last week’s Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.Charlton manager Nathan Jones added: “He’s a leader, an unbelievable pro and he should take his rightful place in the history of Charlton Athletic.”The tough thing is, we want to evolve, we want to improve on every level and it meant that Doc’s game time was probably going to be more limited than he wanted.
