CHICAGO (AP) — Chase Meidroth drove in the lone run with an RBI double in the sixth inning, and five Chicago White Sox pitchers combined to scatter four hits as they blanked the Oakland Athletics 1-0 on Saturday, extending the A’s losing streak to eight games. Oakland’s skid marked its longest since a nine-game drought from May 27 to June 4 of last season, and they have dropped 12 of 13 overall, slipping to 41-54 on the year. The White Sox, meanwhile, secured a winning record in a home series for the 11th time in their past 12 set-ups.
Reliever Erick Fedde, the third pitcher used by Chicago, earned the win (5-6) after surrendering just two hits over four innings. Grant Taylor closed things out with five outs for his fourth save. Earlier in the game, Bryan Hudson started, followed by Chris Murphy in the second.
Meidroth and Luis Acuña each contributed two of Chicago’s five hits. Gage Jump (3-4) took the loss for Oakland, giving up one run on five hits across 5 2/3 innings in what was his ninth start since being promoted from Triple-A on May 26. The rookie left-hander fanned seven and walked two.
Meidroth’s two-out double plated Colson Montgomery, who had drawn a leadoff walk earlier in the frame. Joshua Koruda-Grauer also produced two hits for Oakland, including a double, and is currently 18 for 41 across his first 11 major league games.
On the A’s side, first baseman Nick Kurtz, who had been in the lineup to start Tuesday’s All-Star Game as a replacement, was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb capsule sprain, retroactive to Friday.
Oakland is set to wrap up the series on Sunday with a pitching matchup featuring J.T. Ginn (7-5, 3.10 ERA) taking on White Sox left-hander Noah Schultz (2-6, 6.00). For Chicago, the win kept the Sox ahead in the season series and provided another low-scoring, grind-it-out victory that showcased timely hitting and steady relief pitching.
