Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Sporting winger Geovany Quenda for £40m, the 19-year-old agreeing an eight-year contract. He becomes the second new arrival announced under manager Xabi Alonso, following the £42m swoop for Atalanta left-back Marco Palestra. Quenda’s move is notable because the Portugal under-21 international had already pledged his future to Chelsea as far back as March 2025, during Enzo Maresca’s 18-month tenure in charge.
Quenda is expected to slot into Chelsea’s first-team plans and offers versatility across several roles, including winger, attacking midfielder, and wing-back. It is understood he spent the past week training at Chelsea’s Cobham base, even though the first-team squad was not scheduled to reconvene until Alonso’s first session on Thursday.
“I feel fantastic to be here,” Quenda said upon the club’s announcement. “Chelsea is a great team, and I’m excited to play at Stamford Bridge. The club has shown faith in players like me, and I am proud to be here and to be part of this club.” He added: “I’m eager to work with my teammates and the manager, Xabi Alonso. I’m a hard-working young player, and I want to help my team. I aim to be known for the right mentality, to support my teammates, and to give my best for the club in pursuit of trophies.”
Chelsea’s formal confirmation confirms Quenda’s departure from Portugal after 86 appearances for Sporting, including 16 in the Champions League, where he broke through under former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim. The move comes amid a flurry of activity as Chelsea seek to strengthen their squad, with talks already held over a potential deal for Rayo Vallecano full-back Pep Chavarria and discussions about Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix. The club also explored options to sign midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland but were unsuccessful in their pursuit. French and Argentine sources indicate Valentin Barco, who has already indicated his departure from Strasbourg, is set to join Chelsea to bolster midfield options.
Several players have already left Chelsea this summer. Marc Cucurella has joined Real Madrid, Tyrique George has moved to Everton, and Andrey Santos is poised to join Manchester United following a £50m agreement announced on Wednesday.
Chelsea’s ongoing transfer activity reflects the club’s ambition to revamp the squad under the new management of Xabi Alonso. Quenda’s arrival adds depth to a young, flexible attacking group, capable of filling multiple roles across the forward and midfield lines. As the club continues to pursue additional signings and potential departures, supporters will be watching closely to see how Alonso shapes a squad intended to compete at the highest levels this season and beyond.
