Chelsea ready to sell Garnacho after underwhelming debut season, two Champions League clubs circle

Chelsea are open to offers for winger Alejandro Garnacho as two unnamed Champions League contenders circle in the aftermath of a challenging season that saw Garnacho attract attention from Europe’s top clubs. The West London club are prepared to part ways with the 22-year-old just a year after the £40m transfer from Manchester United, signaling a clear willingness to reshape the squad ahead of the new campaign.
Garnacho’s debut season in Chelsea colors yielded a modest return: one Premier League goal and four assists, with the Argentine winger starting 14 league matches. His limited playing time and the team’s overall performance left him out of Argentina’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a development that has added momentum to Chelsea’s decision to explore transfer options. The Blues’ stance is to entertain permanent offers for Garnacho, avoiding any loan arrangements as part of the potential exit.
The Athletic reports that Chelsea are already aware of interest from two clubs that are set to compete in next season’s Champions League. One club that has previously shown interest is Napoli, who have secured a place in Europe’s premier competition, indicating their potential willingness to pursue Garnacho in a serious bid. Chelsea, however, have ruled out loan moves and would only consider a permanent transfer to move Garnacho on.
Manchester United will be watching the situation closely, especially since they included a 10% sell-on clause in Garnacho’s deal when he moved to London last summer. That clause could benefit United should Garnacho leave Stamford Bridge in the future, depending on the eventual transfer terms.
Chelsea’s management remains hopeful of at least recovering the £40m invested last summer, with the club looking to generate funds to support a broader rebuild under new head coach Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard is keen to reinforce the squad with a central midfielder and a centre-back during the current transfer window, while negotiations continue for Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria as a potential defensive recruit.
In the defensive department, Chelsea have also identified several centre-back targets to bolster depth and competition within the squad. Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix and Como’s Jacobo Ramon have been named among the front-runners to strengthen Chelsea’s backline, reflecting the club’s strategic emphasis on adding experienced, reliable players who can adapt to Alonso’s tactical system.
As the window progresses, Chelsea’s approach to Garnacho’s future will remain a focal point. The club’s willingness to accept a permanent exit signals a broader plan to recalibrate the squad’s balance and leverage the transfer market to secure players who can contribute immediately and over the long term. With Alonso prioritizing a commanding central midfield presence and a solid centre-back option, Chelsea’s transfer activity this summer could define their competitive trajectory for the upcoming season and beyond.
