Chicago Cubs vs. Baltimore Orioles preview, Wednesday 7/8, 5:35 CT

By admin — In News — July 8, 2026

Wednesday Facts: The Cubs are 11-4 in all Wednesday games this season and 6-2 on the road. Last season they went 13-12 overall and 7-6 away from home. They are 15-14 in the second game of series and 8-6 on the road. Finishing the previous year, they were 34-19 overall and 17-9 on the road. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
Back to Back: In their 17-6 surge beginning June 11, the Cubs have only dropped back-to-back games once, on Friday and Saturday at home against the Cardinals. They had previously won three, two, four, and five in a row before their consecutive wins on Sunday and yesterday. Forty of the Cubs’ 51 wins have come in winning streaks, while 29 of their 40 losses have come in losing streaks. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
Home Run Facts: The Cubs’ eight homers in their 23-3 rout of the Padres last Wednesday marked just the 37th game since 1901 in which a team hit at least eight home runs. Since then, the Cubs have not homered in their four subsequent games. Twenty of the previous 36 teams with eight or more homers homered in their next game, and all 16 of the others did so again in their second game. Only two of the prior 10 teams with at least eight homers failed to homer in their next game: the Phillies—the last team to homer eight before the Cubs, on Sept. 24, 2025—and the Blue Jays, who hit eight on June 13, 2021. After the Cubs set a team record by slugging eight homers against the Cardinals on July 4, 2025, they hit two, one, one, and zero homers in their next four games. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
Today in Wrigley Field History: Wrigley Field, the Cubs’ home, hosted its first All-Star Game, with the AL defeating the NL 2-1 in front of 41,123. Cubs representatives were Phil Cavarretta and Andy Pafko, with Pafko contributing one of the NL’s five hits. This occurred 79 years ago today, Tuesday, July 8, 1947.
Cubs lineup vs. Orioles lineup: Over his last three starts, Colin Rea owns a 1.76 ERA and a 1.304 WHIP, a strong rebound from a rough patch in late May and early June. Rea last faced the Orioles in 2024. The current Orioles are a small sample against him (9-for-35, .257) with one home run (Tyler O’Neill) and 12 strikeouts. Dean Kremer missed two months earlier this year with a right quad strain and has started only once since his return, on July 1 against the White Sox, where he allowed four hits and one run in six innings. He threw 79 pitches in that outing, suggesting no strict pitch limit for this game. Kremer last faced the Cubs on July 9, 2024, in Baltimore, and the Cubs hit him hard, including home runs by Michael Busch and Ian Happ. Michael Conforto is 3-for-4 against Kremer in his career and has also homered off him.
