Splitting the Series: By taking two of three from Baltimore, the Cubs evened their series record for the season at 14-14-2, with 14 wins, 14 losses, and two splits. They’ve gone 6-1-1 in their last eight series. Last year, after 30 series they stood 18-9-3 and finished 31-19-3. Through 93 games a year ago they were 55-38. Today they sit at 52-41. One-Run Games: Yesterday’s defeat marked the Cubs’ first one-run loss in 27 games since a 2-1 home loss to the Giants on June 7. In the interim they had gone 18-8, including four wins decided by one run. For the season they’re 15-10 in one-run games. They finished last season at 25-19 in one-run games, their first winning record since going 26-25 in 2018. From 2019-2024, the Cubs were a combined 123-142 in one-run affairs. Out-Hitting the Opponent: The Cubs lost yesterday despite outhitting the Orioles, 9-3. They’d won all 14 prior games in which they had at least six more hits than their opponent. They sit at 39-5 when they outhit opponents, 4-2 when they tie in hits, and 9-34 when they’ve been outhit, including their 9-7 win on Wednesday in which they had eight hits while giving up 14. Today in Cubs History: The Cubs snapped a five-game losing streak and a 20-game stretch in which they went 5-15 by defeating the Pirates 6-5 at PNC Park. Anthony Rizzo went 4-for-5 and Albert Almora Jr. homered in the victory. This occurred 10 years ago today, Sunday, July 10, 2016.
Cubs Lineup: Reds Lineup: Shōta Imanaga, recent five-start line: 3.00 ERA, 1.148 WHIP, 26 strikeouts in 27 innings, four home runs allowed. That’s… pretty good. On May 7 at Wrigley Field, Imanaga held the Reds to one run in six innings with 10 strikeouts. That would play tonight. The last time he pitched in Cincinnati was Sept. 19, 2025, when he allowed three home runs in five innings, though that was during a second half when he likely hadn’t fully recovered from a hamstring injury. The previous year, June 9, 2024, Imanaga threw 6.2 innings and allowed two runs with only one home run. Here’s hoping we get the 2024 version tonight.
Hunter Greene has just returned from an injury that sidelined him for most of this year, undergoing removal of bone chips from his right elbow. That’s never ideal for a pitcher. His only start since coming back was July 4 at GABP against the Orioles, where they shelled him for seven hits, four walks, and eight runs in 3.2 innings. He threw 89 pitches and maxed out at 99 mph, but he might not be fully ready yet. Last year, September 18, 2025, Greene threw a one-hit complete-game shutout against the Cubs. I’m not sure he’s that guy again… yet.
