​Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy returned to practice Monday for the first time in two weeks. He had been away from the team to focus on helping his wife recover from a gunshot wound. Mia, 57, was shot July 26 in the couple’s home in Virginia by their son, Elijah. She had sustained gunshot wounds to the arm and chest, and was taken to the ICU.Three days following the shooting, head coach Andy Reid confirmed Mia was no longer in the ICU and that “she’s doing great, better than she was. [We] love having him here. But right now, it’s important that he takes care of business. And everybody knows that.”So everybody’s game is picked up and they’re all working hard. Eric will be back soon enough to jump in there and do his thing.”Bieniemy had been at training camp when the news broke about the shooting. Elijah, 27, had been taken into custody and was charged with three felonies. A video showed police carrying Mia away from the home so that she could get medical attention. The video also showed the responding officers putting cuffs on Elijah and taking him into custody. The three charges were “Malicious Wounding, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, and Discharge of a Firearm Inside of a Dwelling,” per a release.Bieniemy is in his first season back with the Chiefs. He was Kansas City’s OC from 2018-22, helping the team win Super Bowl LIV and LVII.But after being turned down for head-coaching gigs, Bieniemy left for the Commanders in 2023. He spent just one year as the team’s offensive coordinator but was not retained by the new coaching staff.Bieniemy spent the 2024 season with UCLA before joining the Chicago Bears as the team’s running backs coach in 2025.At the end of the 2025 NFL season, the Chiefs parted ways with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy and opted to bring back Bieniemy in the role.That decision was met with excitement from tight end Travis Kelce, who called Bieniemy “one of my favorite coaches of all time, one of my favorite people of all time.”
