David Brytus-Imagn Images TPX IMAGES OF THE DAYThe Chiefs are 4-0, but nobody is celebrating that 30-27 win over the Raiders like they should. It was a dogfight. While taking sole first place in the AFC West is great, the way we got there was ugly. The offense left plays on the field in all three phases, and the pass protection is looking like a disaster waiting to happen. The Line Is a Massive WorryWe all worried about Kahlil Benson facing Maxx Crosby. According to Arrowhead Pride, that worry was somewhat justified. While Benson fought well, the real problem was the left guard situation. The Chiefs sat Kingsley Suamataia for what the team called a “coaching decision,” per Arrowhead Pride. Replacing him with Mike Caliendo was a mistake. Caliendo was a liability throughout the entire game.Patrick Mahomes had to work too hard. He threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns, but the pocket wasn’t clean. The Raiders had two sacks on him. Even though the Chiefs didn’t record any sacks on Sunday, they were hitting Kirk Cousins often enough to keep the game close.Tyquan Thornton Was the Bright SpotTyquan Thornton played one of the best games of his life before things went wrong. He wasn’t just a role player here. He scored two touchdowns when the team needed him most. It’s hard to see him without him. According to Arrowhead Pride, Thornton went down with what looked like a “gruesome lower leg injury.” We need him back. Without his clutch plays, this game could have gone a different way.Special Teams Must ImproveThe special teams unit is failing us. It isn’t just one bad game; it’s been a bad three years. We saw an illegal formation and an illegal fair catch. It’s unacceptable. The Raiders even had a chance to take control when they went for it on fourth and two at the Chiefs 18-yard line, but they failed. The Raiders are a real threat in Klint Kubiak’s first year. They showed they belong in a playoff-style game. Kenneth Walker III was the difference maker for Kansas City. He had 177 rushing yards on 22 carries and two scores. His 76-yard run at the end of the third quarter really swung the momentum.
