Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes eyeing Week 1 return vs. Broncos: ‘I don’t want to miss that game’

   ​Patrick Mahomes continues to eye Week 1 for his return from an ACL injury that cut his 2025 NFL season short.The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback tore his ACL in Week 15, but remains ahead of schedule in his recovery and hopes to be on the field for the team’s season opener on “Monday Night Football” against the reigning AFC West champion Denver Broncos.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAppearing on Wednesday’s edition of Yahoo Sports Daily, Mahomes told Caroline Fenton that he’s going to give himself every chance to start the season on time.“That’s my goal,” Mahomes said. “I’ve said that since the beginning is being ready to go Week 1. I can’t predict the future and I know that it’s a long process. It’s not just my decision, but at the same time I’m going to give the doctors and the coaches every single opportunity I can to let me be out there Week 1.“I don’t want to miss that game [against the Broncos] because that’s the team that won the division while we were gone and you want to be out there and ready to go with your teammates. I’ll give every single thing I can to be out there Week 1 and hopefully the doctors and the coaches give me the green light and I’m able to go out there with my guys and compete against one of the best teams in the league.”As much as Mahomes is targeting Week 1, he understands that an ACL recovery takes time. I think that’s what I’ve learned throughout this entire thing,” Mahomes said. “So all I can do is be as great as I can be every single day. You just have to maximize that day and slowly get better and better as the year goes on. I’m excited to get back to training camp. I’m excited to get the guys back around. I’ve kind of been in the building in Kansas City by myself. General manager Brett Veach has made changes, bringing in Kenneth Walker II at running back and reshaping the team’s defense. Veteran tight end Travis Kelce also decided to return for another season.Mahomes, who will turn 31 three days after the Broncos game, was forced to adjust to having to watch and not play.
