After a single season with Standard Liege, Nayel Mehssatou, the Chilean midfielder, appears poised to depart. Sudinfo reports that he is likely to return to familiar ground with Kortrijk. Mehssatou departed Kortrijk after their relegation from the Pro League two seasons ago to join Standard Liege on a free transfer, but with Standard Liege back in the top flight, the versatile midfielder seems set to rejoin his former club. His return would be a welcome boost for Kortrijk as they strive to avoid an immediate drop to the second tier and to reestablish themselves as a stable Pro League side.
Mehssatou originally joined Kortrijk in January 2022 from Anderlecht and made 108 appearances for the club, scoring five goals. During his time in Yellow and Black, he transformed himself from a full-back into a dynamic, box-to-box midfielder capable of operating in a deeper role or pushing further forward. He can still slot in at full-back if required, giving Kortrijk ample flexibility across the pitch. His departure from Standard Liege comes after 31 appearances for the team, though most of his minutes came from the bench rather than as a regular starter.
If the deal goes through, Mehssatou is expected to be among Kortrijk’s summer signings, joining Chelsea youngster Harrison Murray-Campbell in strengthening the squad. The move would underline Kortrijk’s intent to solidify their status in the top flight and build depth across multiple positions. As the club eyes a more competitive campaign, Mehssatou’s experience and versatility could prove invaluable in their bid to maintain Pro League status and push for a more stable, consistent performance level throughout the season.
