Christian Pulisic spoke publicly about the United States’ World Cup elimination for the first time, addressing the national team’s defeat to Belgium in the knockout round. Belgium defeated the U.S. 4-1, ending the run for one of the host nations in Seattle. Since the loss, Pulisic has faced criticism, including remarks from former women’s soccer star Carli Lloyd.
Pulisic, the captain and star winger of the U.S. men’s national team, posted a lengthy message on Instagram on Wednesday, July 8—two days after Belgium claimed the 4-1 victory that sent the Americans home from the tournament. In his caption, he began with gratitude: “Tough to find the words. I want to start by saying thank you to everyone who believed. The support carried us all the way through.” He accompanied the message with a photo of himself in action on the field. He added, “It simply wasn’t good enough from us in the end and I wanted to deliver so much more. I still feel blessed to be a part of this team. The memories this summer will last a lifetime. It’s just the start for us and for this sport in America 🇺🇸.”
Belgium took an early lead with a goal in the ninth minute. Malik Tillman equalized at the 31st minute, scoring the United States’ lone goal of the night. But Belgium’s Charles De Ketelaere struck again moments later to restore the advantage. The U.S. fought hard but was unable to turn the tide. In the 57th minute, U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese came out too far, and Hans Vanaken converted third for Belgium. Romelu Lukaku sealed the result with a fourth goal in stoppage time, extinguishing the U.S. hopes.
Balogun, another U.S. striker, also addressed the loss the day after the defeat. He apologized to fans in a message posted on X, acknowledging the disappointment of his World Cup debut and the wait until the next opportunity. “My debut World Cup. It hurts to wait 4 years to compete at the highest level our sport has to offer. I want to say sorry to our fans it was not good enough when it mattered most and we let you down,” the 25-year-old wrote. He added that soccer in America will continue to grow and that belief, talent, and passion are rising, insisting that the best days lie ahead and that the future belongs to those who never stop believing.
This moment—amid the national team’s exit—has dominated headlines as supporters and analysts reflect on what the squad might learn and how the sport’s future in the United States can be strengthened.
