​Our Red Bulls will start the season with Christian Zawieschitzky as their new number one goalkeeper – even though the homegrown talent from the Red Bull Academy will retain his number 52 jersey at his own request.For us as a club, it had been clear for some time that Chris would start for us sooner or later. In the summer, we came to the conclusion that he was now ready for this next step. Back in the spring, we placed great emphasis on him gaining as much playing experience as possible at FC Liefering, which worked out exceptionally well. So he’s not taking on this role unprepared – we’ve been gradually preparing him for it. That he’s a highly talented goalkeeper is beyond doubt. We also discussed this with Danny Röhl from the start, and he fully supports our decision. We offered Chris the number one jersey. The Tyrolean native joined the Red Bull Academy in 2020 and progressed through the various age groups. Now, the Austrian U21 goalkeeper is taking the next step in his career to become our first-choice goalkeeper, having already made five competitive appearances for our Red Bulls (including in the Club World Cup).When I extended my contract, the club outlined this path for me. I was incredibly happy about this opportunity, and even my mother was speechless when it happened. I’m not nervous about the new role. I’m really enjoying things right now and am simply delighted that this trust has been placed in me. The anticipation definitely outweighs any nervousness. It also helps enormously that I’ve already played a few competitive matches – otherwise, the situation would certainly be different. I used to enjoy watching videos of the American football legend Ray Lewis. His mentality and his presence in games really impressed me. At some point, I noticed that he also wore the number 52. Later, I saw a video where he talked about his childhood and youth – and there were some real parallels to my own story!
