Evan McPherson has been so good this season that Cincinnati Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons didn’t even want to go there when asked about the sixth-year kicker’s perfect start. The league acknowledged McPherson’s performances, announcing Thursday, Oct. 1, he was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September.McPherson converted all eight of his field goal attempts and all eight of his PATs over Cincinnati’s three games in September, including a league-best five of 50 yards or more, which also is the most from that distance in a single month in Bengals history. His 32 points scored tied for the most by any NFL kicker, while his total field goals tied for the most by an AFC kicker.“I don’t want to talk about it, and I mean that in a good way,” Simmons said Monday before joking he is not superstitious and moving on to the next topic. This is McPherson’s second AFC Special Teams Player of the Month award —his first since December of 2021. The last Bengals player to win a monthly award was quarterback Joe Burrow, who was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for regular-season games played in December/January of the 2024 season.McPherson opened the season by going four-for-four on field goals, with conversions of 55 and 58 yards, in Week 1 against Tampa Bay. With that performance, he became the first kicker in Bengals history, and remains the only NFL kicker this season, to make multiple field goals from 55 yards or beyond in a game, and he earned the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award. The 2021 fifth-round draft pick followed that with another pair of field goals from over 50 yards in Week 2 at Houston, and he then connected from 50 yards and 38 yards in the Bengals’ Week 3 loss at Pittsburgh.McPherson’s strong start builds off a bounce-back 2025 season, extending his perfect run to 20 straight field goal attempts made, dating back to Week 11 of last season. That is the second-longest streak in team history behind 21 consecutive field goals by Shayne Graham in 2007, and it ties with Cleveland kicker Andre Szmyt for the longest active streak among AFC kickers.
