The failures of the Cincinnati Reds front office have been well documented in many ways, none more than their dead-last record in the NL Central. To make matters worse, the franchise’s future doesn’t look too bright at the moment, even after the MLB Draft, as the Reds still have one of the league’s worst farm systems.Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report ranked the Reds as the 23rd-best group in the MLB, with the top five prospects being Alfredo Duno, Steele Hall, Edwin Arroyo, Hector Rodriguez, and newly drafted Justin LeBron.FanGraphs currently has Cincinnati as the No. 21 farm system in baseball after the draft. Long story short, move after move, this front office has put the Reds in a bad spot. There are multiple players across the minor leagues whom the Reds shipped away for basically no return. Pittsburgh Pirates’ No. 10 prospect Sammy Stafura was traded for Ke’Bryan Hayes. I hear you: How much value could a No. 10 prospect have? But the Pirates have one of the best farm systems in Major League Baseball, and Stafura’s bat has come along to match his borderline elite-level fielding.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementFurthermore, outfield prospect Mike Sirota, who is with the Los Angeles Dodgers as the No. 2 prospect in their farm system, was traded for Gavin Lux, who posted a lackluster single season in Cincinnati before being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations. It is absolutely worth mentioning how young the Reds’ roster is and that their farm system has been pillaged over the past couple of seasons for talent that is helping the big league team. Players such as Chase Burns, Rhett Lowder and Sal Stewart would all be boosting the farm system rankings if they were still eligible. However, it would be easier to take solace in that fact if the big league team were stewarding that talent well; alas, they are not.You also have to consider that Cincinnati’s most recent first-round pick, Justin LeBron, is a very polarizing prospect who, if it clicks early, could become a top-10 prospect in baseball with a power-speed combination and likely won’t spend much time in the minor leagues. However, he could also crater and turn into a boost, like many people think. The Reds will make moves at the trade deadline to add to their farm system after likely making multiple trades. Players such as Spencer Steer and possibly Tyler Stephenson will demand big returns, while Brady Singer may be able to bring in an interesting prospect or two.
