​BEREA — If you would have told Baker Mayfield four and a half years ago Browns fans would turn on their favorite team and root for him to beat Cleveland, the antithesis of a cookie-cutter quarterback probably would have rolled his eyes and snapped back with something like, “Jesus, Tony!”But here we are in Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season, and here we go again with the Browns embarrassing their fans with organizational ineptitude. If Mayfield were to do the expected by leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to victory over the Browns on Sunday, Sept. 20, at Raymond James Stadium, a large faction of Cleveland fans would be left saying, “Good for him.”Whether Mayfield realizes it or not, he’ll enter his reunion with the Browns united with many of their fans by a common enemy: The Cleveland Browns.Anyone with a pulse of the Browns fan base knows people are beyond disgusted with owner Jimmy Haslam’s inferior product. Apathy is widespread. Don’t run errands during Browns game this season unless you want to venture into busy stores full of consumers who aren’t clearing their calendars to view the local NFL team on TV. Of the folks who are still following the franchise, plenty are hate-watching and laughing.Deshaun Watson is still starting at quarterback despite years of failing to consistently play on time or protect the ball, the defense is in shambles early in its life after Myles Garrett and Jim Schwartz and the overall operation is the epitome of the “s—– football” first-year Browns head coach Todd Monken rails against.The Browns were outclassed in virtually every consequential area on Sept. 13, when they suffered a 34-10 season-opening loss at the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Browns fell behind 31-0 with 12:08 left in the third quarter, relegating the second half to garbage time. Monken’s men finished with 11 penalties for 75 yards.The Browns (0-1) will visit Mayfield and the Bucs (0-1) next. You can bet a paycheck Mayfield will be motivated to bounce back after losing three fumbles in a 33-27 defeat at the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1 and even hungrier to exact revenge on the Browns. The only Browns players who remain from Mayfield’s Cleveland tenure are cornerback Denzel Ward and safety Grant Delpit. Monken spent the 2019 season as Mayfield’s offensive coordinator in Cleveland.But Mayfield doesn’t have an ax to grind with any of them. His beef is with the ownership group led by Jimmy and Dee Haslam and their son-in-law JW Johnson, plus the front office headed by general manager Andrew Berry. They were the ones who chose former Browns coach Kevin Stefanski over Mayfield and dumped the former No. 1 overall draft pick for Watson in 2022.Even Browns players who were never Mayfield’s teammates realize they should brace themselves for a player seeking vengeance.”Wanting to prove a point, whether your former team made a mistake or just to prove that you’re a heck of a player, I think every athlete has that sort of mindset, just wanting to prove that they’re th
