Clippers Want to Hold on to Young Wing in Peyton Watson Pursuit

By admin — In News — July 8, 2026

The Los Angeles Clippers have clearly signaled their interest in free agent Peyton Watson but are not prepared to part with a key piece in a potential sign-and-trade deal. Per ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk, the Clippers are not willing to surrender Bennedict Mathurin to land Watson. Watson, presently a restricted free agent who most recently played for the Denver Nuggets, is among the top targets on the market, though Denver is likely to match any offer sheet given his potential and youth.
“The Clippers have interest in Denver’s Peyton Watson, who is a restricted free agent,” Youngmisuk noted. “The Nuggets can match any offer sheet and want to keep Watson but could always opt for a sign-and-trade. The Clippers also want to keep their own restricted free agent Bennedict Mathurin, whom they acquired in the Zubac trade.” This dynamic leaves the door open for a sign-and-trade as the most probable route to adding Watson, who is just 23 years old.
Watson’s continued rise has made him a coveted asset. Although he dealt with an injury hiccup in the 2025-26 season, he still appeared in 54 games, averaging 14.6 points on 29.6 minutes per game, along with 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists. He joined the Nuggets after the 2023-24 season, having previously been with the Pacers, and has demonstrated his two-way value and potential to contribute as a versatile wing on a team-focused roster.
Mathurin, meanwhile, split his 2025-26 campaign between the Pacers and the Clippers, totaling 54 games. He enjoyed his strongest pro season yet during his time with the Pacers, averaging 17.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, largely while serving as a starter for a less-than-stellar supporting cast. Once he joined the Clippers, Mathurin transitioned into more of a supplementary role yet continued to deliver impactful scoring off the bench, posting 17.4 points per game with comparable rebounds and assists in fewer minutes.
At 24 years old, Mathurin remains a restricted free agent, and the Clippers are eager to keep him as they attempt to reestablish their competitive standing and reinsert themselves into the playoff picture. Retaining Mathurin would give the Clippers a valuable young wing on a roster that has been assembled to emphasize speed, versatility, and depth. The franchise’s pursuit of Watson, paired with its ongoing efforts to hold on to Mathurin, underscores a broader strategy: build around a youthful core capable of growing together as a cohesive, competitive unit.
The Clippers’ broader strategy has involved reshaping their roster around young talent and high-upside players who can contribute immediately while developing into long-term pieces. The acquisition of Darius Garland in a prior deal with the Cavaliers has influenced the team’s direction, as has the addition of Mathurin from the Pacers, Keaton Wagler in the draft, and Rui Hachimura in free agency. With Watson’s skill set and size—paired with Garland’s ball-handling and scoring ability—there’s a clear intent to create a dynamic, youthful nucleus that can compete at a high level in the coming seasons.
Still, Denver’s stance on Watson’s restricted free-agent status complicates matters. The Nuggets can match any offer sheet, and they’ve shown a willingness to keep Watson around, which means the Clippers may need to pursue a sign-and-trade offer that would be palatable for Denver while keeping Mathurin in the fold. In that scenario, the Clips would be giving up draft capital or other assets to secure Watson’s services, even as they try to preserve a core around which to build their playoff ambitions.
As talks continue, the Clippers’ preference remains to maintain Mathurin’s rights while exploring a path to Watson through a sign-and-trade arrangement. The importance of keeping Mathurin is underscored by his progress, his youth, and the ability to contribute immediately as a scorer who can slide between a starting role and a valuable bench option. The club’s strategy reflects a delicate balancing act: secure a young, gifted wing in Watson who fits their timeline, while preserving another budding talent in Mathurin who could become a cornerstone of the rotation for years to come.
