A native of Texas who holds both American and Icelandic citizenship, Cole Campbell joined Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022. While in Dortmund, he developed through the club’s youth ranks, featuring for the U17 and U19 squads and making 58 competitive appearances for BVB’s youth teams. He found the back of the net 19 times during his time with Dortmund’s youth setup. Campbell enjoyed notable success with BVB’s U19 team, helping them clinch the A-Junior Bundesliga West title in consecutive seasons, securing championships in 2023 and again in 2024.
Lars Ricken, Borussia Dortmund’s Managing Director of Sports, praised Campbell’s progression, saying, “Cole is an incredibly talented player with a lot of potential. He made the leap to professional soccer with us. We thank Cole for his time with us and wish him all the best for his future, both on and off the field.” Campbell’s development into a professional footballer culminated in his first-team debut for Borussia Dortmund during the 2024–25 season. Over that season, he appeared in seven competitive matches across Dortmund’s first team, competing in the Bundesliga, the UEFA Champions League, and the DFB-Pokal, demonstrating his potential at the highest levels of European football.
Following his initial spell with Dortmund’s senior squad, Campbell was loaned to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the second half of the 2025/26 season. During his loan tenure, he took the field five times in the Bundesliga for Hoffenheim, gaining valuable top-flight experience. His performances during the loan period further showcased his versatility, pace, and attacking instincts, reinforcing his reputation as a dynamic prospect with international roots and a growing toolkit of professional capabilities.
As a dual national with ties to both the United States and Iceland, Campbell has represented the U.S. at youth levels, reflecting his commitment to the American national program while continuing to develop in Europe. His early success with Dortmund’s youth teams, coupled with his first-team exposure in Germany’s top competitions and his loan experience in the Bundesliga, has positioned Campbell as a promising talent within European football. Clubs and scouts looking for young, athletic forwards with a nose for goal and a track record of securing important appearances may take note of his emerging profile as he progresses in his professional career.
