Cologne reach agreement in principle to sign Edson Álvarez

Cologne have reportedly reached an informal agreement with English Championship side West Ham over the possible signing of Edson Álvarez, according to a report by Florian Plettenberg. The Mexico captain appears enthusiastic about a move to the Cathedral club, having gathered firsthand information about the Billy Goats—the fans, the atmosphere, the city, and the stadium—and receiving consistently positive feedback. However, a potential obstacle could be the extent of the salary reduction Álvarez would need to accept to complete the switch.
Plettenberg also notes that Álvarez has attracted offers from Turkey, following a 2025/26 loan spell at Fenerbahçe, where he made only 18 appearances after undergoing ankle surgery at the start of the year. The move to Cologne would represent a significant coup for the German club.
Cologne’s interest in Álvarez could be aided by Tim Steidten, the club’s head of squad planning. Steidten previously worked for West Ham and was instrumental in bringing Álvarez to England in 2023, suggesting a potential bridging role in negotiations between the two clubs. If a deal progresses, Álvarez would bring considerable experience and quality to Cologne’s midfield, enhancing their ability to compete at higher levels and potentially strengthening a squad that has been keen to make a statement through meaningful signings.
For Cologne, securing Álvarez would not only underline their ambition but could also signal a shift in their transfer strategy, combining ambitious recruitment with the expertise of a scouting and planning department that already has established connections within the English game. As talks continue, the club will have to weigh financial considerations, contract length, and the player’s willingness to accept a reduced wage in exchange for a move that offers regular top-flight football and a central role in their midfield structure.
In the broader transfer context, Álvarez remains a target for multiple clubs, including suitors in Turkey, which adds a layer of competition to Cologne’s pursuit. If Cologne can negotiate terms that satisfy both Álvarez’s career goals and the club’s financial parameters, the signing could prove transformative, marking a significant step in Cologne’s ongoing efforts to elevate their standing domestically and in European competition.
