So now it has come to this: the final game of the first half for the Colorado Rockies before the All-Star Break. They’ll face the San Francisco Giants in a bid to salvage a series split in the Bay Area. A year ago this time, Colorado stood at 22-74, barreling toward a hundred-loss season and a historically miserable campaign that would spark a long-awaited rebuild. Their lone All-Star at that point was breakout catcher Hunter Goodman.
Today, the Rockies close out the first half with a 39-58 record—still difficult, but not anywhere near the catastrophic levels of last season. They’re in a cluster with several other teams posting tough marks, enough to call the period “regularly bad” rather than uniquely disastrous. There is a foundation taking shape, and the offense has shown meaningful improvement. Hunter Goodman remains the lone All-Star representative, though it’s fair to say there were some snubs along the way.
Right-hander Michael Lorenzen will start for Colorado, aiming to cap the first half with another solid showing. After a rough stretch earlier in the year, Lorenzen has found a bit more stability of late. In five of his last six starts he has gone at least five innings, something he managed in only half of his first 14 outings. During this recent run, he’s allowed more than two earned runs just once. His last start featured a six-inning quality performance in a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, during which he yielded three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out five.
On the mound for San Francisco is rookie Trever McDonald. McDonald appeared in four games across the 2024 and 2025 seasons, but this year marks his first sustained opportunity with the Giants. In 12 starts this season, the 25-year-old carries a 5.46 ERA with 50 strikeouts over 59.1 innings. In his most recent outing, he was tagged for eight runs on 11 hits against the Toronto Blue Jays, lasting just 2.1 innings and failing to record a strikeout. McDonald has faced Colorado only once before, but he delivered a seven-inning quality start, yielding three earned runs and striking out a career-high 10 in that appearance.
This season McDonald has shown a knack for avoiding hard contact and generating grounders. His go-to pitch is a sinker that sits around 93.6 mph, complemented by a slider, a cutter, and a changeup.
First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. MDT. TV coverage is provided by Rockies.TV, with radio options on 850 AM and 94.1 FM KOA Rockies Radio Network; Spanish broadcasts are available on KNRV 1150 AM.
