Colts roster: Can Cameron Mitchell secure spot on 53-man in crowded CB room?

Between now and training camp, we’ll take a thorough look at the Indianapolis Colts’ full 90-man roster, offering a detailed preview of each player. Up next is cornerback Cameron Mitchell, who wears number 43. He stands 5-11 and weighs 191 pounds, entering the league’s 2024 season at age 24 with four years of NFL experience. Mitchell played college football at Northwestern, and his path to the Colts has included several notable stops along the way.
Last season, the Colts added Mitchell to their practice squad ahead of Week 6’s matchup with Arizona. Before joining Indianapolis, his NFL journey began with the Browns, who selected him in the fifth round of the 2023 draft. Just before the Colts brought him aboard, Cleveland released Mitchell, opening the door for him to pursue new opportunities in Indianapolis.
Mitchell ultimately earned a spot on the Colts’ 53-man roster as the team navigated injuries at the cornerback position. He appeared in eight games on defense, including one start, and logged 225 defensive snaps. In that span, he allowed just nine completions on 18 targets, surrendering an average of 5.8 yards per reception. Pro Football Focus credits him with four pass breakups, and he ranked 21st among all cornerbacks in forced incompletion rate for the season, a testament to his ball disruption ability.
His place in a crowded cornerback room presents a challenge and an opportunity. With Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward, and Justin Walley occupying three assured roster spots, there are two to three spots up for grabs depending on how many cornerbacks the Colts decide to keep. Mitchell, along with Cam Taylor-Britt, Mekhi Blackmon, Johnathan Edwards, and Jaylon Jones, will be competing for those open spots. From this group, two or three players are likely to miss the final cut.
Mitchell’s NFL experience at both nickel corner and outside corner positions could be a meaningful advantage in securing a roster spot. His versatility allows him to contribute depth at two potentially crucial positions, giving the Colts a flexible option in a defensive backfield that may face injuries or rotational needs throughout the season.
