Columbia’s Jack Beck selected by Houston Astros in 13th round of 2026 MLB Draft

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

For the first time in more than a decade, a Columbia Central graduate has been chosen in the MLB draft. Lions pitcher and hitter Jack Beck was selected 391st overall in the 13th round by the Houston Astros in the 2026 MLB Draft, announced on July 12. Beck becomes the first Columbia Central standout to be taken in the MLB draft since Heath Slatton, who left Columbia Central for Middle Tennessee State University and went in the 18th round of the 2015 MLB Draft to the San Francisco Giants. Although Beck has already signed with Georgia Southern, he told The Daily Herald before the draft that his immediate priority was clear: “getting drafted right now is the biggest goal. Whatever it takes to play pro baseball.”
Beck’s ascent on draft boards accelerated throughout the spring as he produced a standout season at the plate. He earned numerous honors, including District 12-4A Player of the Year, and he earned spots on The Daily Herald’s All-Area team as well as TSWA’s all-state list. Over the course of the season, Beck posted a .413 batting average, driving in 32 runs, collecting 10 doubles, four triples, and 12 home runs, while showcasing his speed with 25 stolen bases. His power and speed combination made him one of the more intriguing in-state prospects entering the draft, and his performance helped raise his profile among professional scouts.
Following the regular season, Beck remained in close contact with multiple MLB organizations. He participated in June’s draft combine and competed in the Appalachian League, actions that kept him visible to teams as they finalized their draft decisions. His proactive approach extended beyond the field, with Beck staying in communication with professional scouts and front offices as they evaluated his potential to contribute at the next level.
