General Manager Adam Peters continues to pursue ways to strengthen the team behind the scenes, and the latest move brings in a familiar face from Peters’ network. The Commanders hired Demitrius Washington, formerly an assistant general manager with the Minnesota Vikings, as a senior personnel executive. Washington joins the Commanders after the departure of Scott Fitterer, who left the organization to join the sports agency Athletes First.
Washington’s signing comes on the heels of his four seasons with Minnesota, where he built his reputation and cultivated relationships that are valued in NFL front offices. Peters and Washington previously collaborated in San Francisco with the 49ers, where Washington also worked closely with Peters’ circle. During his time with the Vikings, Washington held the role of assistant general manager after serving as vice president of football operations from 2022 to 2024. His ascent reflected the Vikings’ recognition of his leadership and organizational abilities. Yet, in January, following a disappointing 2025 season for Minnesota, the organization decided to move on from Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, the then-general manager, as they prepared for new leadership. In June, the Vikings brought in Nolan Teasley as the new general manager and began a broader reorganization, which included a shift away from Washington. In light of these changes, Washington was available to explore opportunities elsewhere, and his established connection with Peters facilitated a swift return to the NFL in a role with the Commanders.
The Commanders’ latest hire is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the front office during a period of transition. The team previously brought in Scott Fitterer in 2024 to join Peters’ staff. Fitterer has an extensive NFL background, beginning as a scout with the New York Giants in 1998. A Seattle native, he progressed through the Seattle organization, joining the Seahawks as a scout in 2001 and earning promotions over the subsequent years. He eventually served as the team’s director of college scouting during their Super Bowl-winning era, and he rose to the position of vice president of football operations in 2020. Fitterer later became general manager of the Carolina Panthers, a role he held for three seasons from 2021 to 2023, before moving to join Peters’ staff in Washington.
This move continues to illustrate the Commanders’ emphasis on networking and leveraging personal connections within NFL management.
