Conor McGregor Issues Statement Following UFC 329

By admin — In News — July 12, 2026

Conor McGregor, the UFC’s biggest star, issued a statement after his first-round TKO loss to Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 329. Returning to the Octagon for the first time in five years since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021, McGregor’s comeback was cut dramatically short. In just 69 seconds, Holloway defeated him as McGregor appeared to suffer a knee injury, forcing an unexpected stoppage in what had been one of the most highly anticipated fights in UFC history. The ending stunned fans and caught many by surprise, especially McGregor himself, who later claimed on social media that he entered the fight without any injuries.
After UFC 329 concluded, McGregor addressed what happened in the main event in a social media post. “My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell,” he wrote on X. The post underscored the sense of a brutal and unforeseen setback for a fighter whose career has been defined by resilience and comebacks.
Looking ahead, observers are left wondering how McGregor will respond to this latest obstacle. His last major return—five years after the 2021 leg injury—marked a difficult journey back to the cage, and this sudden injury on his comeback has only deepened questions about whether he will pursue another return or consider retirement. The possibility of another comeback will hinge on his competitive spirit, his physical recovery, and his appetite for continuing at the highest level after enduring such a brutal setback against Holloway.
There was widespread attention around whether there was any pre-existing injury lurking before the Holloway fight. UFC president Dana White addressed the issue, noting that, given the magnitude of hype surrounding the bout, any prior injury would likely have been noticed. “When we were talking earlier and the guy over here was asking about a pre-injury, just on my accounts, the faceoff that day (between McGregor and Holloway) is at 80 million views, right? So if there was a pre-existing injury, somebody would have noticed it. He was limping, put his shoes on, and he ran right at him,” White said. “I don’t think there was. Anything is possible, but he sure didn’t look like (he was injured). And for 80 million just on my accounts, that number has gotta be massive, and nobody noticed anything, so there you go.” These comments reflect the UFC’s stance that there was no obvious pre-fight injury, though the post-fight perspective from McGregor suggested a sudden and severe issue.
As the sport processes the results of UFC 329, McGregor’s next move remains uncertain. He possesses substantial wealth from his boxing crossover and endorsements, which frees him from the necessity of competition for financial reasons. Yet, as someone who has built a career on relentless competition, the lingering question is whether he will push for another comeback or permanently step away from the sport. His decision will likely factor in his own assessment of his health, his desire to compete at the highest level, and his belief in his capacity to deliver the performance that fans expect.
In the larger context of UFC 329, Holloway’s victory added another layer to a fight card that had already generated enormous anticipation. The event will be remembered not only for Holloway’s win but also for the dramatic, and ultimately abrupt, nature of McGregor’s exit from the bout and the ongoing speculation about his future in mixed martial arts. As fans and analysts debate what lies ahead, McGregor’s statement on social media will be revisited as part of the broader narrative surrounding his career, his health, and the enduring question of whether we have seen the last of him inside the Octagon.
